Hypnotherapy demystified
Unlike stage hypnosis, clinical hypnosis is used in
a theraputic way. It is used to help you find your own
solutions to your own problems and not to make you cluck
like a chicken.
Hypnosis isn’t the least bit mysterious or supernatural.
You have been in a hypnotic state yourself literally
thousands of times. This may be when you are day dreaming
or may have happened when driving. If you have ever
been driving along a familiar route, you may have switched
off our mind and suddenly wonder how you arrived at
that point in the journey or you may have gone past
the turning to your road. This is because your subconscious
mind has taken over.
Brief history of Hypnotherapy
Every culture through history has used hypnosis in
one form or another and it has associations with shamans
and whitch doctors and healers. It was first used in
medicine in the 1700 by Dr Franz Mesmer and later used
to relieve pain in operations in the mid 1800s and also
used by Freud in the early 1900s. It received serious
study and gained acceptance in the 1950s.
Hypnotherapy is now recognised as a highly effective
tool for modifying behaviour and for healing. Studies
show that it is the most effective method to help people
stop smoking.
So what is it like?
If you have ever meditated or taken part in a relaxation
at the end of a yoga session you will find that being
hypnotised is very similar.
It is nothing to be afraid of, you will be aware of
what is going on and you do not lose control. You can
choose to go into hypnosis and you can come out of it
at any time if you want to, although it is better to
be guided by the therapist.
The therapist is there to guide you into deep relaxation
or trance to enable your subconscious mind to work to
find your own solutions to your own problems. This experience
will be different for everyone.
